General Information

Scott McCloud’s book provides an analysis of how comics work, using the central device of ‘closure,’ the work the reader does in moving from panel to panel, as the primary ‘work’ done by comics.

Instructors’ Teaching Experience

As someone who does not study graphic novels, I found McCloud’s theory of visual rhetoric extremely useful. I had my students read a selection of his work before we read Persepolis so as give students interpretive vocabulary and methodology to use as we explore Satrapi’s work.
